The riddle has been solved as it pertains to the seeding for the top three teams in the Desert Valley League softball standings.
With Palm Desert’s 5-1 victory over La Quinta on Thursday, the Aztecs and Blackhawks, along with Indio finished the season at 10-2 as Desert Valley League tri-champs.
After exhausting other tiebreaker methods, the athletic directors of the three teams met at about 4 p.m. today and decided it by coin flip.
And the winner was (drum roll please): Palm Desert. The Aztecs will be the No. 1 seed out of the DVL and play a home game on Thursday according to coach Steve Leonhard.
The other two teams then went to the normal head-to-head tiebreaker, which La Quinta won over Indio having swept the Rajahs during the regular season. So La Quinta will be the No. 2 seed and Indio the No. 3 seed when the pairings are released on Monday.
This is all a great relief to me, assistant sports editor Shad Powers, as I have been trying to figure out this complex series of tie-breaking procedures for a few days now as I documented in this blog.
For those asking I haven’t heard about the fourth-place tiebreaker between Coachella Valley and Palm Springs yet, but I will update this blog and tweet it when I find out. Update: According to several helpful twittering Coachella Valley students, it appears that the Arabs won the tiebreaker to claime the fourth spot and the automatic playoff spot. Palm Springs will have to wait for Monday’s announcement to see if it earned an at-large bid.
Here’s to actually playing some playoff games next week and not worrying any more about tiebreakers.
